First Heresy: Time Setting
The first heresy, which Ellen White had met four decades before, began to blossom soon after Minneapolis. By March, 1892 a time setting problem reached the stage where it called forth a series of articles in the Review entitled, “It Is Not for You to Know the Times and the Seasons.” Ellen White begins by recounting the disciples' question after His resurrection as to when Christ would set up His kingdom. After repeating His reply, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in His own power,” Ellen White comments:
Instead of exhausting the powers of our mind in speculations in regard to the times and seasons which the Lord has placed in His own power, and withheld from men, we are to yield ourselves to the control of the Holy Spirit, to do present duties, to give the bread of life, unadulterated with human opinions....
Satan is ever ready to fill the mind with theories and calculations that will divert men from the present truth, and disqualify them for the giving of the third angel's message to the world (RH 3/22/92; Par, 3; see also 1888 Materials, 958).

Thus not only do “calculations,” in applying Daniel’s time prophecies to the future create divisions and divert minds from present truth, but it disqualifies one from giving the 3rd angels’ message, with its “Christ-crucified” focus. Paragraph 6 warns of "continual danger of getting above the simplicity of the gospel" and of "intense desire ... to startle the world with something original, that will lift the people into a state of spiritual ecstasy, and change the present order of experience" (my emphasis). The 7th insists:

Spiritual knowledge... will never develop in any line that will lead us to imagine that we may know the times and the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power [ie, “withheld from men”]. Again and again have I been warned in regard to time-setting. There will never again be a message for the people of God that will be based on time. We are not to know the definite time either for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit or for the coming of Christ (RH 3/22/92; all emphasis supplied).

Despite this counsel, time setting continues to crop up and has again been gathering momentum in the past two decades. The urgency of that counsel is evident in that Ellen White then quoted extensively from an 1851 warning against time setting that she had placed in an envelope and marked “A copy of a vision the Lord gave Sr. White June 21, 1851. Preserve carefully.” Meantime, the second heresy was incubating.
