GEOWORLD A theme park designed like a big map of the world INTRODUCTION What school wouldn't want their students to go to a theme park where they could experience the entire world inluding it's: geography, plants and animals, cultures, history, and languages. EDUCATIONAL THEME PARK About 7 million students graduate from high school each year. GeoWorld could become the default theme park for schools to take their students to because, not only would it be fun, but a unique educational experience. GeoWorld could offer school packages. Whereas many schools do a one-day Disneyland-type of class trip ($76), it would make sense for schools to have multi-day visits to GeoWorld. This is because many schools would travel a considerable distance to go to GeoWorld and because it would take several days ($150) to experience all of the educational experiences that GeoWorld would have to offer. Considering the greater charge, schools might conduct fundraisers over a couple of years in order for students to be able to go. LOCATIONS GeoWorld should also be within a one, full-day drive of school buses of most children in the United States. It should be fairly near a major population center so as to allow for a source of local visits. It should be located near a major airport which would allow for distant visitors. Because of GeoWorld's oceans, the parks would need to be located on fairly flat land. Combining all fo these factors, SIZE Disneyworld = .33 miles x 0.5 miles Epcop Center = .60 miles x .7 miles Disneyland = .75 miles x 1.3 miles GeoWorld = 1.70 miles x 2.8 miles GeoWorld would be about four times the size of Disneyland. However, the land mass of GeoWorld would be about the same as Disneyland. MORPHOLOGY From the air, GeoWorld would be a very recognizable map of the Earth. However, there would be distortions to the map in order to accomplish the following: - Increase the percentage of the park which is land mass by increasing the proportion of continents to oceans. - Certain areas with many small countries or islands would be relatively enlarged including: Central America and the Carribean, Europe, Japan, Korea, the islands in the general Indonesian area. - Greenland, Australia, Alaska, and northeast Russia would not be distorted as is common with most map projections. OVERALL APPEARANCE As planes fly into the airport and look down upon GeoWorld, it would appear very much like a satellite map of the world on a clear day. Areas of desert, forests, snow, and oceans would appear very much like a satellite photo. In order to maintain this appearance, parking, would be on the edge of the park and housing and transportation structures would be under ground. Also, sidewalks would be colored according to the color of the immediate land.
